Legacy of Learning has been endorsed by many local organizations dedicated to serving the disenfranchised youth of Boulder County. Our active partnerships include:
Many of our students are referred to us by these organizations because they recognize the need for strong academic intervention for at-risk youth. In the words of Magistrate Tijani Cole, Boulder County's former Juvenile Magistrate as well as the founder of Justice High School, "Legacy's systematic approach and their dedicated teachers open the door to post secondary education. They provide a valuable service to the community." Gaining a firm grasp on basic academic skills improves the lives of our students and gives them a future as productive, self-reliant members of our community.
Since 2006, Legacy of Learning has worked closely with the lowest performers at Justice High School. These students, who often have significant gaps in their learning and moderate to severe behavioral issues, benefit greatly from personalized instruction. All Justice High students, who were in danger of being forgotten or condemned by society, are given the opportunity to be successful. In fact, they are required to be accepted by three colleges in order to graduate.
One of Legacy of Learning's longest relationships is with the "I Have a Dream" Foundation. We have been teaching Dreamers for over 12 years at their community centers and in schools that have not met adequate yearly progress. About 20 students are consistently in our programs.
We have continued to strengthen and expand our relationship with the University of Colorado. In August 2011, we received a $20,000 contract through the University's Student Employment and Work Study Office from America Reads and America Counts programs. This has enabled us to hire and train ten CU students as Direct Instruction teachers. In addition, the School of Education and the Volunteer Resource Center have been excellent sources of highly qualified, diverse volunteer teachers.
Our students represent a variety of ethnic backgrounds and learning histories. Students attending our center are often referred to us by local therapists, resource teachers, school principals, judges and other professionals. Our instructional techniques and carefully selected and trained teachers create a supportive, nurturing bond, encouraging the student to overcome internalized feelings of inadequacy and hopelessness. We work with students from a variety of school environments such as students who are home-schooled, have been expelled or have missed a significant amount of schooling. Many of our students deal with educational, developmental or behavioral issues. Regardless of their background, each student comes to us with a unique set of needs, and, by providing academic intervention one-to-one or small, homogenous group instruction at our center, we are able to successfully meet these needs.
